August 26, 2019, Women’s Equality Day, marks 99 years since women were given the right to vote. Now women rank among some of the best CEOs, scientists, astronauts, and change-makers in our world.
While progress has been made, there is still more to accomplish when it comes to equality in the workplace. As you reflect on Women’s Equality Day, consider women’s rights and opportunities while interviewing at companies for potential new positions.
Equality = Progress
Studies show that women make up a small fraction of high-ranking roles compared to men, despite the progress of the last 99 years. It’s also statistically more difficult for women to gain a promotion in a male-dominated workplace. In women-led companies, this obstacle is lessened, providing a level playing field for both men and women.
Diversity should be a business priority. As job-seeking individuals, you should ask questions about women in leadership roles in the company. Doing so will give you insight into the company’s commitment to diversity and equality.
Some questions to consider asking during an interview are:
How many women are in leadership positions at your company?
What policies are in place to ensure equality in promotions and filling leadership positions from within?
Does HR have a weighted pay scale to ensure equality between individuals with comparable experience?
If the interviewer doesn’t know the answer to these questions, ask to have an HR representative follow up with you. If the interviewer doesn’t place importance on these topics, you’ll have a clue about the culture in the workplace regarding equality.
